WHAT WAS THE REAL INTENTION OF THE ORGANIZERS OF THE FLOTILLA

According to Palestinian Media Watch, the Gaza flotilla participants created war atmosphere
before confronting Israel. Participants chanted Islamic battle cry invoking killing of Jews and
called for Martyrdom.

According to the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, the "IHH, which plays a central
role in organizing the flotilla to the Gaza Strip, is a Turkish humanitarian relief fund with a
radical Islamic anti-Western orientation. Besides its legitimate philanthropic activities, it
supports radical Islamic networks, including Hamas, and at least in the past, even global jihad
elements."
Israel outlawed IHH because of its affiliation with the Union of Good and because it is an
important factor in Hamas’ global fund raising. It was included in a decision made by Defense
Minister Ehud Barak in 2008 which outlawed 36 associations which belonged to the Union of Good
(IHH appeared as number 36 on the list4).
The ITIC has reliable information indicating that in the past IHH had links with global jihad and
Islamic terrorist elements in the Middle East. As part of its connections with the global jihad
it supported jihadist terrorist networks in Bosnia, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Chechnya.
That was manifested by logistic support for the transfer of weapons and money. This information
verifies findings of a study conducted by a Danish research institute into IHH’s past links with
Al-Qaeda.
In 2006 a Danish research institute called the Danish Institute for International Studies
conducted a study which reported that in the past IHH had connections with Al-Qaeda and global
jihad operatives. The well-documented study was conducted by Evan Kohlman, an American researcher
who specializes in Al-Qaeda and related subjects. It deals with the involvement of Islamic
charity funds and foundations in supporting terrorism.

INTERNATIONAL MARITIME LAW

I would like to show two points regarding the legality of boarding the Flotilla in international
waters. It is important to understand that the Flotilla's intention was to undermine Israel's
sovereignty, and thus, boarding of the ships in international waters was legal under
international law.
(A)
According to the San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea, 12
June 1994:
SECTION V : NEUTRAL MERCHANT VESSELS AND CIVIL AIRCRAFT
Neutral merchant vessels
67. Merchant vessels flying the flag of neutral States may not be attacked unless they:
(a) are believed on reasonable grounds to be carrying contraband or breaching a blockade, and
after prior warning they intentionally and clearly refuse to stop, or intentionally and clearly
resist visit, search or capture;
(b) engage in belligerent acts on behalf of the enemy;
(c) act as auxiliaries to the enemy s armed forces;
(d) are incorporated into or assist the enemy s intelligence system;
(e) sail under convoy of enemy warships or military aircraft; or
(f) otherwise make an effective contribution to the enemy s military action, e.g., by
carrying military materials, and it is not feasible for the attacking forces to first place
passengers and crew in a place of safety. Unless circumstances do not permit, they are to be
given a warning, so that they can re-route, off-load, or take other precautions.

Hebrew University international law expert Dr. Robbie Sabel explained that a state, in a time of
conflict, can impose an embargo, and while it cannot carry out embargo activities in the
territorial waters of a third party, it can carry out embargo activities in international waters.
Within this framework it is legal to detain a civilian vessel trying to break an embargo and if
in the course of detaining the vessel, force is used against the forces carrying out the
detention then that force has every right to act in self defense.
Dr. Sabel noted that there is a long history of embargo activities in international waters.

THE NAVY ASKS THE FLOTILLA TO DOCK IN ASHDOD

The Israeli navy asked the Flotilla to dock in Ashdod, Israel and told them that the goods would
be delivered to Gaza to which the captain of of the Flotilla answers "Negative, negative, our
destination is Gaza". This whole thing could have been avoided and ended peacefully if the
Flotilla had not tried to breach Israeli sovereignty but had accepted Israel's offer:

THE TERRORISTS ATTACKING THE SOLDIERS

I'll start by saying that the Israeli soldiers were not prepared for this level of violence,
which is evident by the fact that they boarded the ships with paintball guns instead of M16's.
They had prepared for passive resistance. When they landed on the ship, dozens of people (we now
know that they are connected to terrorist organizations and are suspected of being paid to cause a
riot on the ship) started beating the soldiers with weapons they had prepared from the beginning
of their travels, such as bats, metal bars, knives, slingshots etc. The soldiers came down one by
one and as each one landed, they were literally lynched by the mobs of angry thugs. Here is a

THE FIRING OF LIVE ARMS BY THE TERRORISTS

The shootings of firearms occurred after the soldiers realized that the thugs were shooting at
them. The thugs had stolen guns off the soldiers that they lynched and started shooting at the
soldiers. In self defense, the soldiers shot back. In this video, you will see the moment that
the soldiers realize that they are being shot at. Their voices and reaction show that they were
caught by surprise:

THE PREPARATION FOR BATTLE BY THE TERRORISTS

And finally, was this whole Flotilla really necessary? Israel had offered to deliver the goods to
Gaza anyway if the Flotilla had only sent them to Israel to be checked. Despite the provocation
they caused, Israel nonetheless delivered the goods as promised as can be seen in this video:
